Infants and Children: Supporting Your Child’s Physical Growth and Development
Infants and Children
From the very beginning, a child’s body undergoes an extraordinary rate of physical transformation. As they transition from the cramped environment of the womb into the wide-open world, their musculoskeletal system is constantly adapting to new forces, postures, and physical milestones. At Family Tree Osteopathy, we believe that structural support plays a vital role in helping children navigate these rapid changes with physical ease and comfort.
Too often, early structural tensions are overlooked, leaving parents searching for answers when a child seems unsettled or struggles with certain movements. Our approach is reassuring, highly professional, and tailored entirely to the specific developmental window of your child. We use a range of tailored, non-manipulative manual techniques to assess and support your child's structural alignment.
Supporting Your Child’s Physical Growth and Development
Adapting Our Treatment For Your Child's Growing Body
We recognize that a baby's physical needs are vastly different from a school-aged child's. To provide targeted, practical care, we structure our paediatric consultations around three distinct developmental stages and their associated milestones:
Baby (Under 12 Months): The transition through birth involves significant physical pressure on an infant's head, neck, and spine. We focus on detailed structural evaluations to support physical comfort following delivery. During this first year, we track key physical milestones such as rolling, sitting, and crawling. Whether you are noticing a strong postural preference (such as your baby only turning their head to one side) or physical tension that seems to interrupt their natural movement transitions, we look at the underlying mechanics to encourage symmetrical development.

This milestone window involves significant structural adaptation, changes to foot mechanics, and rapid bone growth. We assess the alignment of the feet, knees, and pelvis to support balanced structural mechanics as they navigate these major weight-bearing milestones and transition into active running and jumping.
Child (4–12 Years): School-aged children face an entirely new set of physical milestones and environmental demands. Prolonged sitting at desks, the daily load of carrying heavy school bags, rapid growth spurts, and the introduction to coordinated weekend sports can place sudden stress on a developing frame. Our care focuses on assisting the body to adapt to these growing milestones, helping to manage posture-related discomfort and keeping young bodies moving resiliently.
If you want to support your child's musculoskeletal system as they grow and reach their next physical milestones, taking proactive action is simple.
Dental Support
At Family Tree Osteopathy, we view paediatric health through a comprehensive lens. A child's structural comfort does not exist in isolation. The alignment of the neck, upper back, and cranial bones directly influences jaw mechanics, facial development, and airway function.
If your child is currently undergoing dental or orthodontic assessments, or if you have concerns regarding their facial growth, structural alignment can play an important supportive role. We look closely at how these interconnected systems are moving together, working to identify where musculoskeletal tension may be impacting their natural development.
